Council moves on Dewsbury Moor homes

Work has started on a new council homes scheme in Dewsbury Moor and a senior councillor says the project will deliver much-needed homes for hundreds of people among the 15,000 waiting for accommodation.

The development at the former Westmoor House site will see 46 new properties, offering homes for older people along with care, support and community facilities.

The site, which will be known as Woodland Court, is at the junction of School Lane and Staincliffe Road. It is one of 27 schemes to build new homes across Kirklees as part of the £92.5m Excellent Homes for Life project.

The aim is to provide quality accommodation near existing communities and amenities. The first homes should be ready to rent by the end of September.

The council has teamed up with partners such as Regenter and Wates Living Space to deliver the scheme.

Kirklees Council leader Mehboob Khan said: “This will have a huge impact in Kirklees, regenerating whole communities and providing new quality homes.

“We will soon be able to offer families and individuals the chance to move into homes to suit their needs.”

Coun David Sheard, lead Cabinet member for regeneration and investment, said around 15,000 people are currently on the Kirklees housing register, as well as an increasing number of older people needing accommodation with extra support to help them stay independent.

“So this scheme will provide much-needed homes for hundreds of people,” he said.
