Councillors object to Tesco plans

Councillors have voiced objections to a supermarket’s plan to install a cash machine.

A planning application submitted by Tesco for its Mirfield shop was discussed at Mirfield Town Council last night.

The firm wants to put a standalone ATM outside its Huddersfield Road Express store, next to Queen Street.

But council chairwoman, Coun Vivien Lees-Hamilton, said: “It’s detracting from a historic and iconic building.

“It’s going to stick out like a sore thumb in front of an old building. It’s going to pop up like a Tardis.”

Coun James Taylor said he was concerned about queues for the ATM spilling into the road, posing a danger.

He added that the operators of nearby CCTV cameras might become unduly focused on the ATM, leaving other areas exposed.

The store was given planning permission in 2011, but its application to have an ATM in the side of the building was rejected.

Coun Thomas Hirst wanted to know if the standalone ATM would charge, as there is already a free cash machine at the nearby Natwest.

Members of the council also discussed a separate application by Silvadis Estates to convert the floors about the shop into flats.

Coun Martyn Bolt said people living in the flats could take up parking spaces that should be saved for shoppers.

Members of the public have until June 14 to comment on both planning applications.
