Dewsbury MP’s fears over red tape threat to Olympic Torch relay

THIS week hundreds of people have lined the streets cheering as the Olympic Torch makes it way across the country – but there are fears the celebrations may fizzle out when the flame reaches Dewsbury.

MP Simon Reevell has written to all schools in his constituency asking that pupils line the streets to see the historic occasion, but he said some are getting tangled in health and safety red tape.

The Dewsbury and Mirfield MP said: “There were some heads saying they need so many adults per child, or they would start school late and ask parents to take them but some parents can’t get time off work. We don’t want the torch going through and nobody is there.

“If we can get a man on the moon, then we can find a way to get schoolchildren out to see the torch.”
