Energetic Edna keeps fit and healthy at 90

Edna Williams may be one of Dewsbury Sports Centre’s oldest members, but she’s still giving her younger gym buddies a run for their money.

The energetic pensioner, who turns 90 today, makes light work of the flight of 14 stairs up to her Earlsheaton flat thanks to the three weekly exercise classes at the centre and Dewsbury Library.

Edna said: “It’s as important to keep as active as you can. I get out and about a lot.

“I enjoy the chair-based exercise classes and I’ve made a lot of good friends.”

On Tuesday Edna’s friends from the class teamed up with sports centre staff to throw her a surprise party and present her with a cake.

“I never expected anything like this ever,” she said. “It’s been absolutely tremendous. They couldn’t have done enough for me. I’ve been touched with it all.”

Sylvia Boon, 70, helped organise the party with class volunteer Anne Wilcock, 73.

The pair said Edna was an inspiration to her classmates.

Sylvia said: “Edna does really well here at the class. She puts the rest of us to shame!”

After the celebration the group went for lunch at Silkwood Farm.
