The evening of music, song and dance has been inspired by Donizetti’s light-hearted opera The Elixir of Love, which will be performed in a shortened form in English by professional singers from Opera North as part of the programme.

A cast of more than 100 local performers and professionals will take to the stage at Batley’s Central Methodist Church on Tuesday, March 22.

Participant Graeme Raynor from Batley Community Choir said: “I’ve got a theatre degree but, until the other week, I’d never even seen an opera before, never mind sung any. I had that stereotypical view of opera – heavier people crooning along like the Go Compare advert and had no interest. Then we went along to see L’elisir d’amore the other week and it was fantastic. I’m a real convert already. I’d go back and see another one.”

Creative Scene, which organised the event with Opera North, creative producer Rebecca Legg, said: “What these participants have accomplished in such a short amount of time is truly remarkable. From singers to dancers to school children, all have been so enthusiastic to try something new. I hope the local community comes out to enjoy what is sure to be a fantastic evening.”
