Family tree has ancient roots

A MIRFIELD family has traced its roots back almost 500 years.

Joan Wright, of Greenside Estate, Mirfield, said her cousin Dorothy Pickering, of Brighouse, had traced the Sheard family name back to the 15th century.

And more than 30 members of the family came from across the country to a reunion at the Yorkshire Puddin', Dunbottle Lane, Mirfield, to share stories and learn more about their heritage.

The trail starts with Thomas Sheard, who was born in Ovendale, Halifax, in 1515.

Thomas married and moved to Mirfield. His son Michael was born in the town, and lived at Northorpe Hall. Michael, a woolman, died in 1632 and left 20 shillings in his will to the poor of Mirfield.

The family tree ends with the youngest member, Joan's great-grandson Finn Goodall, four.

Mrs Wright said: "Dorothy has really worked hard and I really admire her for it. she has been working on it for more than two years.

"I was absolutely amazed when I saw it – it is very interesting and it's unusual for someone to go so far back with a family tree."
