Plans for Mirfield Music Festival were originally featured in the Reporter last month, and organiser Donal O’Driscoll said the overwhelmingly positive public response prompted him to kick plans up a gear.

Acts including singer Roger Davies and rock band Further From The Truth have confirmed they will play the festival, which would be part of Yorkshire’s 100 Days of Culture to coincide with this year’s Tour de France Grand Départ.

Mr O’Driscoll said: “It is something I’ve put quite a lot of time into because Mirfield, with its links to cycling, really needs to commemorate this – and the response I have had from people has been incredible.

“Things are now progressing very nicely – seven outlets in Mirfield have agreed to sell the tickets.

The event would take place on May 25, and tickets have now been dispatched to businesses in Mirfield.

About £10,000 would need to be raised through ticket sales for the festival to go ahead. If not enough tickets are sold, the money raised would be donated to Kirkwood Hospice.

The only other obstacle to getting the festival up and running is getting hold of the live music licence, for which an application will be sent off this month. Mr O’Driscoll said: “I just have to convince the council that people will be safe on the grounds. I have organised festivals before, and I can’t see it being a problem.

“This is a great opportunity for Mirfield and I hope everyone gets behind it.”
