First clues to Pioneer plan

PIONEER House could be home to a centre helping new businesses flourish in Dewsbury.

Kirklees Council has been tight-lipped about its plans for the listed building since its compulsory purchase bid was approved in March.

It has still not taken full control from Stayton Group, but council papers have revealed the next steps.

A report on the progress of the Dewsbury Improvement Plan said repairs to Pioneer House would start in the summer or autumn.

It said a key tenant had been found who was looking at setting up a ‘business generator’ with workspace for fledgling businesses.

But Coun Khizar Iqbal (Con, Dews South) said: “I would like to see the building used more for retail rather than this kind of initiative. I think this type of facility already exists in Batley.”

He said there should also be proper investment in the iconic building.
