He was taken to Dewsbury and District Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

At 9pm, officers were told that a 39-year-old man had also been taken to hospital with a puncture wound in his chest.

The 39-year-old, named locally as Simon Mitchell, was transferred to Bradford Royal Infirmary where he is stable.

Businessman Martin Ibberson was driving through Mirfield with his wife, Sue, shortly after the incident. The couple stopped when they saw a man on the floor outside Royd Court care home.

Staff from the care home helped the man.

“A few minutes later there was a big crowd of people across the road and somebody sitting on the floor,” she said.

A police spokesman said the suspects were in a silver Renault Megane, heading towards Cooper Bridge.
