Free Christmas lunch for elderly people to combat loneliness

Ashworth Grange care home in Dewsbury is hosting a Christmas lunch tomorrow (Thursday) to help combat loneliness among older people.

Elderly people from around the area are invited to the event at the Ashworth Green home from 12.30pm.

Manager Alison Bulmer said: “At Ashworth Grange, we are always looking at ways to aid and integrate with the local community.

“We feel that providing a meal for people who may otherwise be lonely at Christmas would be a great benefit, giving them much needed company and joy during festive period.

“Our residents thoroughly enjoy meeting new people and hosting events in their home so it will be a great day for everyone.”

It is estimated that for 17 per cent of older people, contact with family, friends and neighbours is less than once a week, and this is especially difficult during the Christmas period.

The lunch is free for non-residents but places are strictly limited.
