Friends of park throw a carnival

A town park will be brought to life with a colourful carnival featuring dancing, drumming and crafts.

The Friends of Dewsbury Park Mansion have organised the family fun day, with The Friends of Crow Nest Park, to celebrate passing through to the next stage in the process towards taking over the former Dewsbury Museum building last month.

The group said members were feeling “really upbeat” about the future transformation of the mansion house.

And they are inviting people to celebrate with them, and share their ideas, at the carnival, which will take place in the park on Sunday, June 4.

It will include a bouncy slide, children’s rides, giant crow puppets, a climbing wall and stilt walkers. Bhangra dancing, Dhol drumming and mask making workshops will run at noon, 1pm and 2pm, ahead of a carnival parade around the grounds at 3pm.

One of the Friends’ founding members Jenifer Devlin said: “The project now has a new name - the Dewsbury Park Mansion Community Hub – and a new organisation, which has charitable status and will enable it to bid for the large capital funds necessary to create the new hub.”

Fellow founder Jax Lovelock said: “We really value your input as the project takes shape, so please come along on June 4 and have your say.”

The group is compiling a business plan to present to Kirklees Council, before a decision is made whether it can take over the building through a community asset transfer.
