Greenway portrait bench will feature famous Dewsbury faces

IS rugby legend Eddie Waring your man? Or maybe Betty Boothroyd deserves some recognition for her work in politics?

Whoever you think has made Dewsbury proud, Kirklees Council wants to hear from you.

The council and transport charity Sustrans wants to put a portrait bench in Dewsbury that features the images of noteworthy local people.

The famous figures will be made of steel and people are been asked to nominate the people they would like to see featured.

After that, a shortlist of six to eight suggestions will be drawn up and in spring people will be able to vote for their preferred choice.

The bench will be built later this year. It will be placed on the new section of greenway, which will run from Dewsbury to Ossett.

The first stretch of the greenway, which runs from Sands Lane playing fields to Savile Town, opened in July. The second phase has yet to be approved.
