Half way to victory at cemetery

DETERMINED volunteers have passed the half-way mark in their fundraising mission to restore an iconic stairway.

The Twin Chapels Centre and Batley Cemetery Support Group hope to restore the Stairway to Infinity at Batley Cemetery, removed by Kirklees Council in 1979. The stone steps helped visitors to climb the cemetery’s steep slope and drew the eyes to the distant horizon. Grants from the Batley, Birstall and Birkenshaw Area Committee and the William Henry Coulter Trust boosted the pot, and now a £400 gift from the Yorkshire and Clydesdale Bank Foundation has pushed the fund over the halfway mark.
