Hanging Heaton Golf Club raises £8k for charities

And with the total totted up, Hanging Heaton Golf Club has shared the proceeds between Macmillan Cancer Support and Martin House Hospice.

The club’s 2012/13 captain Paul O’Hara said: “When each captain takes office, they name one or two charities which we’re going to do something for. We had three special fundraisers – a blues night, a sporting dinner and a rock ‘n’ roll night – plus a donation from St James’s Place Wealth Management.”

The three events and donation raised £8,220 altogether.

“We just wanted to raise as much as we could,” Mr O’Hara said. “In addition to that we raised almost £500 for Ryan Glynn, the injured Shaw Cross Sharks player.

“I had a particularly good year for fundraising and I’m very appreciative of the members’ support and generosity.”

During Mr O’Hara’s year in office, the club in White Cross Road also celebrated several successes on the green.

The club won three division championships, taking trophies in the Heavy Woollen League, the 8-15 League and the Lawrence Batley League.

He said: “We had a great year in golfing terms.

“It’s been pleasing to be captain in that period and we would any new members in the year ahead.”
