Harry and Riley win Crufts prize

A Dewsbury dog and his owner were on their best behaviour as they scooped a prize at Crufts.

Two-year-old Cockapoo Riley put his best paw forward to win the Elementary Obedience prize under the guidance of Harry Walker.

Harry, who attends St John Fisher School, was left beaming with pride at Riley’s performance in front of crowds at the prestigious annual competition.

“A lot of effort has gone into that, I’ve been training a lot,” said Harry, 13, who attends Wakefield Dog Training Club.

“It’s important to have a good relationship with the dog and luckily he’s really good.

“You have a better bond with a dog when he lives with you and you’re around each other all the time. He’s like a best friend, I love him.”

Competitive obedience involves obedient and well trained dogs having their abilities tested.

The overall objective is to execute each exercise within a class with precision and accuracy. Both handlers and dogs can be penalised for errors and faults.
