Headfield pupils plant trees in Dewsbury school for Lions International

Pupils at Headfield CofE Junior have made a start on planting around 600 trees in the school grounds as part of an initiative by Lions International.

The scheme is a link-up with Huddersfield Lions Club, of which Headfield music teacher Gill Makin is a member.

The Lions International American president has promised to plant as many trees as possible across the globe during his year of office and is aiming for one million in the UK. Every branch of the organisation has been asked to join in.

As Headfield school has extensive grounds, Mrs Makin suggested the school should take part by planting one tree for every pupil.

“Our grounds seemed ideal for the purpose,” said Mrs Makin. “When I asked the head teacher if the school could take part, he agreed immediately.”

The trees, some of which are fruit species, were acquired from the Woodland Trust and via the Lions.

To get the project under way, Huddersfield Lions president Andrew Thornes was at the school for a special ceremony.

“Our grounds stretch right back to Headfield Road and with so many trees being planted, we could very well have our own woodland in due course,” said Mrs Makin.

“We hope the children will look after the trees.”
