Heckmondwike green champion Julie wins award

An environmentally-minded employee at Heckmondwike's branch of McDonald's has been handed a top eco award.

Julie Barber is a Planet Champion for the Northgate Centre restaurant, and was highly commanded at the fast food chain’s UK Planet Champion Awards.

Julie’s role involves acting as a link between McDonald’s and the community and helping to care for local recreational areas. Julie has organised litter picks, shrub clearing, path building and park furniture installation at both Oakwell Country Park in Birstall and Crow Nest Park in Dewsbury, forging productive relationships with park managers and volunteers. She has also led Love Where You Live events throughout the district.

The restaurant chain has 1,500 Planet Champions across the country to encourage customers to look after their green spaces.

“It’s extremely rewarding to have been recognised for my efforts and contribution to Heckmondwike. I’ve always been environmentally aware and the Planet Champion programme has provided me with the opportunity to make a real difference both at work and in my community, and create a positive impact locally. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the work I’ve done so far and am looking forward to embarking on further projects in the future,” said Julie.

Julie scored highly for her commitment to recycling, litter reduction, community engagement and energy use.
