BBC School Report is an annual project which takes place each year in March.

Schools across the country are invited to take part in the event which gives budding journalists the opportunity to learn about the news industry and to develop their skills within this field.

The event was organised at the Academy by English teachers, Megan Walker and Charlotte Whitehall.

Miss Walker told us: “Taking part in this event will benefit the students as they will gain an insight into researching information from reliable sources, creating their own interview questions and also practicing their oracy skills when filming, presenting and interviewing members of staff.”

News reports and features have focused on the issue of ‘Should teachers carry guns?’

This is a current affairs issue that has been raised in light of the recent Florida school shooting.

All of the students taking part have engaged positively with the chosen topic and have formed opinions on the subject as it is an issue that raises concerns.

The news reports and videos produced by the Thornhill Community Academy students can be found on the Academy’s website at www.thornhillcommunityacademy.co.uk.
