It was Happy Days during a night out when library staff spotted cult TV character The Fonz in a Birstall restaurant.

Actor Henry Winkler was

collecting takeaway pizzas from popular Italian eatery Luigi’s after it was recommended to him.

He played the famous leather-coated, motorbike-riding character in the 1950s-based American sit-com.

Happy Days fan Kathryn Parry, 48, and fellow Batley and Birstall library workers took the chance to pose with the star.

Mum-of-two Kathryn, of Emley Moor, said: “He arrived to collect some takeaway pizzas.

“Being a fan of that age, I asked if we could have pictures and he kindly agreed. I had a T-shirt when I was younger with his face all over it.

“I need to educate my younger children, who didn’t have a clue who I was photographed with. We did the the thumbs up on the picture. I tried to explain, unsuccesfully – needless to say, they were unimpressed.”

Kathryn later Tweeted Mr Winkler to see if he would make an appearance at Birstall Library, where his children’s books are stocked. He replied to her, writing that he had left the area but would come “next time.”

The actor, who was filming in Leeds, campaigns for dyslexia awareness after suffering with the condition – he read his first book aged 31, according to an interview with national newspaper The Guardian.

Restaurant owner Luigi Dabundo said: “He came four times for eating inside with some of his crew and sometimes by himself. It was nice to see somebody like him here. He was a good fellow.”
