The pool room at the Dewsbury and Savile Club off Park Road has been renovated.

A recently set-up committee has raised cash through a crowdfunding website to help with the current refurbishment of the bar.

Jason Batley, who has been going to the club all his life, said: “The 140 year old club was within weeks of closure when one of its members, Anton Edwards, decided to take a couple of months off work to renovate it.”

The committee has raised £521 of its £1,500 target – but there are still five days left to donate.

The cash would pay for materials to improve the bar area and other parts of the club.

But committee member Fran Stoner said: “People coming in and having a drink and playing pool is just as valuable.”

At one point the former cricket club had more than 70 vice-presidents to represent each sporting teamon the committee.

Fran said: “As everyone is aware the pub and club trade has suffered immensely and way too many have closed down - particularly in Dewsbury.

“They are in a situation of use or lose.

“This club is part of our history and has made people happy for over a century.”
