History of buildings and their creators

A talk about the family of architects who designed many of the area’s most impressive buildings will be given at Batley Library next Wednesday (June 5) by historian Malcolm Haigh.

It is fitting that it should be held in the library for it was one of that special family, Walter Hanstock, who designed the building which has dominated the town’s Market Square for over a century.

The family’s other creations include the Zion Chapel, Cross Bank Chapel, the bank in Hick Lane which is now the Union Rooms pub, lots of the town’s schools as well as the public swimming baths in Cambridge Street.

The story of the Hanstocks will be told by Malcolm as he illustrates their achievements with his wide stock of film slides. The meeting starts at 10.30am.
