Hospital petition

A COUNCILLOR who quit his health board role over the threat to Dewsbury’s A&E unit is leading the fight to protect the service.

Coun Paul Kane resigned from the Kirklees and Wakefield joint health scrutiny board last week after seeing a confidential briefing note about potential changes to Mid Yorkshire Hospital Trust’s services.

Together with Labour councillors, he has started a petition opposing any reduction in current A&E or maternity services at Dewsbury.

Coun Kane (Dews East) said: “We want to send a message that we’re not going to stand idly and let this happen. We’re going to do everything we can to make people fully aware of the damage that could be done to our communities.”

Party members took to the streets in Dewsbury on Wednesday to collect signatures and will be back in the town next Wednesday and Saturday.
