Hunt is on for bears hidden around Kirklees

The popular Bear Hunting and Other Ways to Walk programme aims to promote walking and art activities using the district’s 700 miles of public footpaths.

The summer events were such a success that an autumn schedule has now been confirmed.

The Golden Bear Hunt is a district-wide fun search for handmade clay bears hidden around Kirklees by artist Bess Martin. Clues to help find the bears appear on her website www.bessinabout.com, on social media and in local venues. There’s also an interactive map on www.bearhuntingkirklees.com with a record of how many bears are still waiting to be claimed.

On Saturday October 10, Ladywood in Mirfield will host the Gathering Tree Seeds event from 10am-12:30pm. Kirklees Council countryside officer Simon Pedley will help walkers collect acorns and seeds, and advise the public on how to grow them at home. Any seeds left with Simon will be planted in Dewsbury Country Park. Free refreshments are provided at the Ship Inn.

The Herbal Hedgerows walk, led by expert Sue Salmon, also takes place in Mirfield on Thursday October 15 from 10am-12:30pm. Learn about the medicinal properties of wild plants, and how to forage for them.
