Hunt is on to find Mirfield’s warship’s nameplate

The Mirfield Royal British Legion hopes to track down the nameplate from a warship that was adopted by the town during World War Two and later immortalised in a black and white film.

As part of this year’s Remembrance efforts, the branch hopes to bring the nameplate from HMS Coreopsis back to the town that helped support it during the war.

Poppy Appeal officer Tim Wood said:

“During the war most towns adopted a piece of kit, and the HMS Coreopsis, a Flower Class corvette built in Sunderland, was adopted by Mirfield.

“After World War Two it was used by the Hallenic Navy and then decommissioned in the 1950s. It would be wonderful for the town to get the name plate back.”

After it was decommissioned in 1952 by the Royal Hellenic Navy, where it was known as Kriezis, it was used during the filming of The Cruel Sea.

In the film, which came out in 1953, the ship was renamed Compass Rose. After filming it was sold and later scrapped. It is not known what happened to its original nameplate.

Mr Wood added: “It is great that HMS Coreopsis was immortalised in film. Other towns have memorabelia or nameplates from kit they adopted and it would a lasting tribute for Mirfield to have the same.”
