Inquest opens into body found in river

An inquest into the death of a man whose body was found in the River Calder on Good Friday has been opened.

Bradford Coroner’s Court heard the man was identified as missing 77-year-old George Bass, from Harrogate.

Mr Bass’ body was discovered by a man walking his dog on March 25.

He had been missing from home since March 2.

The death was just one of several in the local waterways in a matter of weeks.

On March 17, Hamza Amer, 19, from Batley was found in the Huddersfield Broad Canal and on March 30, missing Daniel France, 38, was found in the River Calder at Dewsbury.

The identity of a body found in Ravensthorpe on March 14 has not yet been released.

A 77-year-old man who was pulled from the Calder and Hebble Navigation Canal at Thornhill Lees, close to the Slaithwaite Road bridge, on March 23 was taken to hospital, but later died.

Mr Bass’ inquest was adjoured until a date to be fixed.
