Inspirational people from Dewsbury and Mirfield to carry Olympic Torch

Swimmer Matthew Johnson will carry the Olympic Torch when it visits West Yorkshire this summer.

The 16-year-old from Thornhill will carry the torch through Beeston, Leeds, in the June relay. He was nominated by both the Olympic Committee and British Swimming.

Matthew’s dad, Ian, said his son, who won a bronze medal last week at the British Gas Championships, was ‘thrilled to be picked’.

In Wakefield the torch will be carried by Harry Crowther, 12, from Mirfield.

Harry, who suffers from a rare ageing condition, was nominated for the bravery he has shown in facing his medical condition.

Extended learning coordinator at Westborough High School Gayna Goalby, 36, will also carry the torch on part of its journey through Wakefield.

She was nominated by colleagues for her community work.
