Kids take over at children’s centre

School children stepped into the shoes of staff at Action for Children when they took over Mirfield Children’s Centre.

The Year 6 pupils from Old Bank Junior and Infant School supported staff with a range of activities for pre-school children such as playing on bikes, painting, role play and making play dough on Friday. They also helped out in the office printing flyers, laminating and answering incoming calls.

Coby Perks, 10, said: “It was great fun and we learnt loads. The little kids were so cute. I wish I could come back every Friday.”

Action for Children invited the children behind the scenes of its Mirfield Children’s Centre as part of the Children’s Commissioners ‘Takeover Day’ which gives children the chance to work with adults and encourages involvement in their local communities.

Mirfield Children’s Centre manager Gillian Haigh said: “It was an opportunity for children to think about their aspirations as well as learn new skills such as administrative work or childcare.

“The children really enjoyed the day and we hope it will develop their confidence and help them think about their future career prospects.”
