LETTER: Thank you for supporting Royal British Legion in Mirfield

On behalf of the Mirfield Branch of the Royal British Legion I’d like to express our thanks to the people of Mirfield for their sustained and generous support of serving personnel, local veterans and their families.

During a time of national financial uncertainty, your on-going support is enabling the Mirfield Branch to do more than ever before where other branches and charities are finding the donations they receive declining.

After the Poppy Appeal, which last year raised a magnificent £13,600, the Mirfield Show is our two biggest fundraising event.

With the signed Huddersfield Town football raffle and Poppy cupcakes as new additions to the ever popular bottle tombola we took more money than ever before and this has only been possible because of you.

A lot of people only think about the Royal British Legion as fundraising through the Poppy Appeal; however, we hold events throughout the year enabling us to deliver care packages to veterans, widows and relatives.

Our next event, run by the RBL Youth Section is the four-relay race on September 7 and a sponsorship form can be obtained from the Old Colonial, Dunbottle Lane, Mirfield.

This year we have also embraced “social media” for the and younger (!), audience. Our Facebook page can be found at www.facebook.com/RoyalBritishLegionMirfieldBranch and our Twitter is @Mirfield_RBL where details of upcoming events as well as photographs etc from previous ones can be found.

Currently there are not only photographs from the Mirfield Show, but also from the National Armed Forces Day service where an original member of the Dunkirk Veterans Association Founders Branch in Leeds passed their standard to us for future safekeeping.

This standard will be carried through Mirfield on Sunday November 10 as part of the Civic Remembrance Parade.

If anyone wishes to join the Royal British Legion, whether a veteran of HM Armed Forces or not, then membership forms can be obtained from the Old Colonial, or Beadelicious in the centre of Mirfield.

Thank you all again on behalf of Mirfield RBL, veterans and their families, and we hope to see you at future events and supporting the Remembrance Parade.
