Lifting the lid on Kirklees eateries

EVERY day, food hygiene inspectors make surprise visits to cafes, restaurants, schools and caterers across Kirklees to inspect how clean and safe they are.

Each establishment is awarded a score, from zero to five stars, and the results are posted online.

The Scores on the Doors scheme is used by 124 local authorities nationwide.

One of the places recently given top marks is Boothroyd Junior, Infant and Nursery School in Dewsbury, which was inspected on June 23. Headteacher Lesley Butcher said the school cooks had earned top marks for the past few years.

She said: “The lunches are really very good. I have one every day, as do quite a few other members of staff.”

Other eateries that scored the maximum of five stars in the past month include: Westborough High, Dewsbury; Slaters Provisions, Cleckheaton; Wm Morrisons, Heckmondwike; Posh Slice, Liversedge; Birkenshaw Kindergarten Club, Birkenshaw; Chikanos, Batley; Moorside Fisheries, Birkenshaw; Hyrstmount Junior School, Batley; Field Lane Junior, Batley; Heckmondwike Grammar School, Heckmondwike and Consultant Catering Services Group, Heckmondwike.

A spokesman for Kirklees Council said on very rare occasions, an establishment could be closed on public safety grounds, or the owner prosecuted, if it fared particularly badly.
