THE Mayor of Mirfield has chosen the charities she will support during her year in office.

Coun Pat Sutcliffe (Con) will raise money for Matrix, a church-led youth work project, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Marina Project, based at Shepley Bridge Marina.

And Coun Sutcliffe hopes to set a town record by rasing more money than any previous mayor.

Matrix was founded by Churches Together in Mirfield and District to provide activities for hard-to-reach young people to help them stay out of trouble.

Fundraiser Christine Sykes said: “Everything that we do has to be paid for and the money does not always come in, so this money is a lovely bonus. No matter how small the figure is, we will be delighted.”

The Duke of Edinburgh scheme at Shepley Bridge provides a range of activities, from archery and canoeing to fashion design, for young people who may not otherwise be able to afford it.

Scheme manager Denise Bedford said: “It’s good that we have been recognised as a community organisation worthy of the Mayor’s support.”

Coun Sutcliffe hopes to break the £3,000 record set by Coun David Pinder during his year in office. She said: “I’ll be fundraising all year round.”
