No election will be held for Mirfield Town Council this year after only one party fielded candidates.
The Labour Party has boycotted the town council election on May 5.
It means the 16 Conservative party candidates will be elected automatically because there are no opposing candidates.
Mirfield Labour Party secretary Michael Hutchinson said: “This party called for the abolition of Mirfield Town Council during a quite recent consultation on the council’s future.
“In view of this, it would be inappropriate for it to support Labour candidates in the forthcoming Mirfield Town Council elections and none has been nominated.”
Conservative councillor Martyn Bolt said: “It’s a bit of a setback for democracy.”
Mr Hutchinson said the party would monitor town council developments and might consider fielding candidates in the future, particularly if the council was given greater responsibility.
