THE out-going Mayor of Mirfield is celebrating a record-breaking fundraising year, but as her successor prepares to take on the role, there’s been a mix-up over who should be the deputy mayor.
Coun Pat Sutcliffe, who raised more than £8,000 during her year in office, has officially handed over the mayoral chains to Coun David Pinder.
This week Coun Richard Hartley, who joined the town council within the last year, was formally voted in as Coun Pinder’s deputy. But a month ago councillors had chosen Coun Vivien Lees-Hamilton as deputy.
At Mirfield Town Council’s annual meeting this week, that decision was expected to be ratified, but instead Coun John Sutcliffe proposed that Coun Hartley be deputy mayor.
A new vote was taken and Coun Hartley cast the deciding vote for himself.
Coun Hartley said: “I hadn’t voted initially because I didn’t believe I was in a position to vote. I was then advised that as a member of the council I was allowed to vote. Obviously, in that situation, I’m going to vote for myself.”
