Nominate your local unsung hero

Every community has its heroes whose courage and bravery inspire others to do more and fight for what is right.

But there are also those who work tirelessly behind the scenes, often without recognition, who make a difference to people’s everyday lives.

After the success of last year’s first ever Local Heroes awards, which culminated in a glittering ceremony at Dewsbury Town Hall, we are asking you once again to tell us about your unsung heroes.

It could be a good neighbour who clears ice and snow from the streets every winter, or who looks in on the elderly in your community to make sure they are all right.

Or it could be a volunteer who coaches a local sports team, a health service volunteer, or even someone whose cakes, raffles and coffee mornings raise money for good causes.

It could be a teacher or a PCSO who has gone out of their way to help. Nominations are welcome for both primary and secondary teachers. Our awards are all about community spirit and people who go out of their way to help others. There are no separate categories this year – we just want to hear your stories of selflessness and commitment to helping.

Awards will be presented at a ceremony at Dewsbury Town Hall on Monday October 3.

The closing date for nominations is Friday September 9.

Nominees must be 16 and over.

Reporter Series editor Hannah Ridgeway said: “There are people in all communities giving time to help those around them who never ask for thanks for what they do.

“They do not always get the recognition they deserve but we want to put that right.”

The event is supported by Kirklees Council.
