MyMirfield’s Richard Hartley shares his thoughts on the weekend ahead.

This weekend highlights some of the many things Mirfield should be proud of:

Mirfield Round Table are hosting their third annual Beer Festival fundraiser at Mirfield Cricket Club where MyMirfield has sponsored a barrel. From 5pm today through until 6pm Sunday evening, expect live evening music, daytime cricket, a hog roast - and of course, over 20 beers and ciders to try.

Then on Sunday morning, community-spirited people in Mirfield are taking direct action with their own strimmers and mowers. An unofficial gathering (all willing volunteers welcome to join in) will occur from 11am at Knowl Park to help make Mirfield a better place in the light of recent Kirklees cut backs.

Finally, to relax the rest of the weekend away, on Sunday from 4pm, Brass in the Woods comes to Hopton Mills Cricket Club.

With music from Meltham and Meltham Mills Brass Band and swing singer Richard Daniels, there will also be Pimms, prosecco and ales, plus stalls and a barbecue.

Then the summer holidays will be upon us with the annual search for children’s entertainment. Recent winner of the publicly-voted My Mirfield Community and Business Award, Mirfield Show will be held this year on Sunday, August 23. This is a rapidly growing event since its re-introduction 20 years ago, attracting visitors to the town from all across the region and beyond.

The summer also sees regular Open Weekends run by the Safe Anchor Trust with free boat trips running from Shepley Marina throughout the day. The My Mirfield Community and Business Award finalists usually run trips lasting about an hour with the children getting a chance to steer the boats.

My Mirfield are also looking for pro-active people and organisations who want to work together with their own expertise to deliver joined up flagship events that will bring more people and commerce into the whole town.

The first gathering will be in August and we are especially looking for people who can bring ideas, then take them back to their groups, families and businesses to deliver.

The first event penciled in is a December one in the build up to Christmas - maybe to tie in with the light switch on, the Christmas Tree Festival, and potential other events around Mirfield on the same weekend. The second is a May Bank Holiday Weekend for next year. If you want to get involved, message us through Facebook or email us at info@mymirfield.co.uk.
