Letter: Best week ever!

All this week I have been doing activities with the Kirklees Adventurous Education Team as part of Outdoor Dewsbury.

On Saturday we did stand up paddle boarding on the River Calder. It was really fun and a bit scary when you stand up.

On Sunday we went to the Canal Festival at Savile Town Wharf. I loved the coracles and the climbing wall. We went on some of the nature walks with Russ to learn about the canal and on the boat trip on a boat called Lady Victoria. On Monday me and my mum went canoeing from Dewsbury to Horbury Bridge. It was hard work but brilliant. We saw fish and ducks on the river and it didn’t rain.

On Tuesday we went back to Savile Town Wharf when we met Chris and went foraging for food along the canal and cycle path. He showed us all the things in the hedgerow that we could eat or use in cooking. Some of them tasted ok and others were not so nice. I liked fire weed the best. After a picnic lunch we learnt how to light fires without matches which was the best afternoon ever.

On Wednesday we set off at 9am in a minibus to Kettlewell in North Yorkshire to go caving. We had to wear big onesies and we were really hot and had to do loads of climbing. I was the scariest day of them all.

On Thursday we went on a Bat Walk at night. We used bat detectors to listen for them and saw them flying around catching food. There were loads of them. In Friday we met at Crow Nest Park to do skateboarding and long boarding and grass sledging. We climbed rope bridges and walked on tightropes which was very hard. In the afternoon we did yoga which was relaxing.

I would like to say a massive thank you to Mikey, Matt, Ian and Greg for teaching me loads of new things and making it all so much fun. I can’t wait until next time.
