More than £1,000 was raised from a summer fete with events organised by parents before the school break.

Money raised will pay for more hands on learning opportunities with a small farm for rabbits, chickens, vegetable patches and more.

Senior Business Manager for Birstall and Fieldhead Primary Academies, Andrew Riley, said: “The parents were incredibly generous with their time and their effort.

“This area will help us provide opportunities that many of the children may not otherwise have.

“We are trying to be a centre of our community.”

The summer fete was set up by parents and included raffles, face painting and a BBQ.

Fieldhead Primary’s forest school has been running for about one year but has already become a favourite for children and staff.

Led by Forest Teacher Mark Parry children are able to learn skills like fire building and archery.

The new extension will soon let children learn more about wildlife and gardening.

Woodworking will be added to their list of skills as a new roundhouse is built in forest.

Mr Parry’s work also helps children learn more about their other class room topics.

And thanks to the effort of the community and parents more of these extra classes will be taught.

Mr Riley said: “We want to thank the whole community for helping and coming to the fair.

“Now when they are studying subjects the Anglo Saxons we can show them the kind of tools they used or when they are learning about plant life we can show how things grow.

“Learning through hands on opportunities.”

The school is aiming for work on the new area to be finished by the end of 2017.
