18 roads to hold Coronation street parties as Kirklees spends on celebrations

On Saturday, May 6, King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla will be officially crowned King and Queen. Hundreds of millions of people around the world will be tuning in to watch the historic event.

Festivities will be taking place across the borough from Saturday, May 6 to Monday, May 8. Over the bank holiday weekend, buildings will be lit across the borough and flags will be flown.

Residents were also encouraged to organise street parties but had to make an application to do so by Friday, April 7. Just 18 streets have requested to take part out of the thousands across Kirklees.

Colin Parr, strategic director for environment and climate said “Communities are at the heart of activity for the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, with the council supporting and enabling a range of community focused events across Kirklees.

“Workshops have taken place with school children and residents of Kirklees, collaborating with Kirklees Year of Music and WOVEN Festival to produce Coronation themed banners and textile works which will be displayed in St George’s Square, Huddersfield. Live music performances will take place in some parks and public spaces and, in line with national protocol, key buildings will be lit up across the district.

“Libraries will be hosting live screenings, refreshments and craft activity sessions across a number of their locations and you will also find events and workshops taking place at Kirklees’ museums and galleries. Wherever possible, events are free to attend enabling everyone to celebrate this significant moment in our history. Some residents will be celebrating by hosting street parties, with 18 streets in total applying and only 13 requiring road closures.

“In what is a difficult time for many, with the cost of living crisis, the council has also been prudent by supporting the Coronation celebrations through its regular services, with just over an additional £5,500 spent on enabling Coronation activity.
