Place your bets on the royal baby

IT IS sure to be the hot topic of conversation at dinner tables and watercoolers all around the country for much of the coming year – the name of the Duchess and Duke of Cornwall’s first child.

No sooner had Kate been admitted to hospital with acute morning sickness than the bookies started taking bets.

There has been a flurry of betting on the possibility of twins – as there is an association between the duchess’s medical condition and the chance of a multiple birth.

Carrigill’s Bookmakers, which has branches in Dewsbury, Mirfield, Ravensthorpe and Heckmondwike, is inviting its punters to try their luck on the baby’s name, hair colour and gender.

It seems the owner of Carrigill’s, George Carrigill, doesn’t have any insider information on the gender of the baby, with odds of the royal child being a boy or a girl both at evens.

“If it’s established that it’s a girl then the odds on Diana will come down very short,” he said.

Mr Carrigill insists the bets are just a bit of a fun – and he is keeping his eye out for anyone with inside information.

He said: “If someone walks in and puts £10,000 on it being a boy or girl, I’ll show them the door!”

Ladbrokes is taking bets on the weight of the royal baby, with the bookies favouring 7lb to 7lb 15oz at 2/1.

But if you really want to throw caution to the wind, you could put your money on some of its more bizarre bets.

The less traditional name of Chardonnay has odds of 250/1, while a baby named after chart-topper Adele would get you odds of 200/1.

And if you think the royal couple are big enough fans of the X Factor that they would name their newborn after this year’s contestant Rylan, you would be offered 500/1. Looks like a long shot!
