Poster art created for new show
Kirklees residents may have noticed a number of posters and flyers around town advertising Batley Gilbert and Sullivan Society's 2017 production of The Gondoliers.
The new artwork was created as a result of a design-a-poster competition aimed at local school children.
The winning artwork was designed by Sophie Whittaker, 11, from Norristhorpe Junior and Infants School, and Saffia Muhammed, 9, who attends Headfield Church of England Junior School.
The competition was judged by society president Stephanie Roe, treasurer and programme editor Robert Thurman, and David Wood MBE, the well-known local artist.
Robert said: “The panel liked Sophie’s picture of a gondola being propelled by a gondolier, but also liked Saffia’s depiction of Venice.
“In the end, we decided to award them joint first prize, and I have been able to create a composite picture which I think works really well.”
Stephanie Roe said, “We were delighted with the response to this new initiative and would like to thank the head teachers and art teachers at the participating schools for their help in encouraging pupils to take part, and the staff at Batley, Birstall, Dewsbury and Mirfield libraries for their assistance in promoting the competition.
“We hope Sophie and Saffia will enjoy seeing their work on the posters.”
The winners and those in the “Highly Commended” category have been invited to attend the Saturday matinee performance when they will be presented with their prizes and certificates by David Wood.
The Gondoliers show runs at Batley Town Hall from Wednesday 5 April to Saturday 8 April, and tickets are available from Stephanie Roe on 07810 447183.
