Prince Charles passes through Mirfield on royal visit

MIRFIELD had a royal moment on Tuesday when the train carrying the Prince of Wales passed through on its way to Wakefield.

Prince Charles was visiting Kirkgate station to perform a re-naming ceremony of the Britannia steam locomotive on platform one. The class 7 locomotive, built in 1951, was the first to be designed and built by British Railways.

It was withdrawn from service but bought by a group of enthusiasts in 1969 before returning to service. The ceremony commemorated the loco reverting to its original name, Britannia.
