Ravenshall pupil meets the Queen at Westminster ceremony

Twelve pupils from Ravenshall School in Thornhill Lees were among 600 children from across the country invited to the Celebration of the Commonwealth ceremony, and teachers nominated year 10 student Megan Rauza to present her bouquet to the monarch in front of BBC cameras at the Abbey entrance.

The group travelled to London by train from Mirfield for the event, which this year was themed around inclusive societies.

Other guests at the annual ceremony included David Cameron and former prime minster John Major, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and popstar Ellie Goulding, as well as representatives of the Commonwealth nations.

“The day was a massive success and headteacher Mrs Tate thought it would be a wonderful experience. All the children involved were extremely happy to have had the opportunity to go,” said school business manager Rachel Thackray.
