Retro night to celebrate charity’s milestone

The Firefighters Charity, formerly known as the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund, is celebrating its 70th anniversary.

And West Yorkshire’s firefighters will be holding a 70s night at the Frontier Club, Batley, on Friday April 26.

Since its formation in 1941, the charity has supported wounded firefighters and provided support to their families during WWII.

The charity has continued to operate a range of services to injured fire service employees and their dependants – most notably at their three rehabilitation, recuperation and therapy centres in Penrith, Cumbria, Harcombe in Devon and Littlehampton, West Sussex.

Last year approximately 400 beneficiaries from the Yorkshire and Humberside region alone used the centres.

The charity, which receives no funding from the government, relies on charitable donations and benefactors.

Celebrities including boxers Amir Khan and Ricky Hatton, Kate Thornton and Bruce Forsyth have all made contributions.

The event at the Frontier Club includes a chicken in a basket meal, live music and fancy dress.

Firefighters from the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Red Hot Dates calendar will also be attending.
