School celebrates success

A SCHOOL has been celebrating after a leap in its GCSE results won it several awards.

David Powell, headteacher of Thornhill Community Science College, went to a ceremony in London to collect three awards for improvements the school has made since 2007.

The school was one of the country’s top five most improved specialist science colleges, after more pupils got five A*-C grades, including English and maths, in last year’s GCSEs. It also got an award for being in Yorkshire and Humberside’s top five most improved science colleges.

The third award was given to the school because 83 per cent of its pupils got five A*-C grades in last year’s GCSEs – up from 33 per cent in 2007.

The Community Science College was also given an award by Kirklees Council for having the best science results in Kirklees.
