School leavers urged to grasp apprenticeship

Rixonway Kitchens, who supply affordable and social housing, employees nearly 500 people at its factory in Dewsbury and has recruited more than 10 apprentices in the last few years.

Of those employees, seven have gained permanent positions with the firm working in accounts, administration, transport, maintenance and purchasing.

And after thousands of young people in our district received their GCSEs last week, Rixonway Kitchens chief executive Paul Rose said an apprenticeship scheme is a great way of learning a skill that can last a lifetime.

“We work closely with local colleges, as well as JobCentre Plus, training provider Optimus and Entice, a group that matches students with businesses, which helps us find suitable apprentices for our schemes,” he said.

“With unemployment amongst young people still so high, it is vitally important that businesses support young people in the local community and provide apprenticeship opportunities.

“I would urge anyone who is interested in learning a long-lasting trade to consider an apprenticeship to bolster their future employment opportunities.”

The manufacturing firm plans to hire another six apprentices over the next year, for roles in accounts, administration, internal sales and IT.

Many of the firm’s apprentices also work towards gaining an NVQ qualification while learning their trade.

Mr Rose said: “Our programmes benefit both apprentices and the company.

“They get a great opportunity to learn key skills and study for a qualification.

“We get enthusiastic young people who are committed to working hard, learning on the job and help us maintain our competitive edge.”
