Gary Sykes will aim to regain the British super featherweight title and win the prestigious Lonsdale belt outright on Saturday, May 10.

It will be the first time Dewsbury has hosted a British boxing title fight and Gary’s trainer Julian McGowan is urging local councillors to help make the night a memorable occasion.

McGowan said: “Dewsbury is always in the news for the wrong reasons but you have a team of people here who are trying to achieve something special.

“This is a piece of sporting history for our town and even if you are not a boxing fan, if you are proud of what Gary is trying to achieve for this area, you have to be there.

“We now need to get local councillors involved. Boxing shows don’t always happen just on ticket sales, we need the businesses and council to really promote this show and make this event happen.

“Winning the British title in your home town will be special and I would absolutely love the whole of Dewsbury to turn out and watch this historic event.

“I don’t think a British title fight will happen in this town again because it has never happened before.”

Local pubs, bars and taxi firms could also be set for a windfall as hundreds of fight fans are likely to descend on the town before the show.

Full ticket details will be released in due course.
