Supporting a sporting hero

Sue Morton-Tate, originally from Crow Nest Terrace in Dewsbury, has known Mick for around 40 years and was saddened by the ways that Alzheimer’s changed him.

“I think of Michael like a lot of football fans would think of Sir Alex Ferguson,” she said.

“It’s just extremely sad that someone could lead such a great life and then have absolutely no idea about the joy they have brought and the importance they once had.

“It’s an awful, awful illness and we want to raise awareness and a maybe a bit of money so that other generations maybe don’t have to suffer as much.”

Sue, 40, will start the walk in Halifax, where she now lives, with her 11-year-old grandson Iestyn tomorrow.

He will begin the walk straight after a junior match against Dewsbury Celtic RLFC with his club, Illingworth ARLFC.

Mr Sullivan was player with Shaw Cross Boys Club in Dewsbury before he signed to Huddersfield RLFC, among others, and went on to world cup success with the British national team.

He still holds the joint record for most caps, at 46, alongside Gary Schofield.
