‘The service is always very moving’

IN MEMORY The programme and a memorial oak leaf from the annual SCARD Oakleaf service.

The Oakleaf service takes place every year to remember people who suffered in road accidents.

It is organised by SCARD (Support and Care after Road Death and Injury) and sister charity CADD (Campaign against Drinking and Driving).

SCARD was set up by Carole Whittingham, whose son Steven was killed by a drunk and drugged driver in Heckmondwike in 1992.

The service, now in its 19th year, will be held at St Peter’s Minster, Leeds, on Sunday November 17 , at 3pm.

The service will be conducted by the Rev Canon Tony Bundock, Rector of Leeds, assisted by the Rev Sue Wallace, vicar Choral of Leeds Parish Church.

Hundreds of people bereaved and injured in road incidents are expected to attend the service, which focuses on personal experiences, observations and readings from the victims’ families. Families are encouraged to bring photos of their loved ones which are displayed around the Font.

Mr Bundock said: “This annual service is always a very moving event providing comfort and support for those bereaved or injured as a result of a road incident, and highlights the importance of care for those whose lives have been blighted in such tragic circumstances, as well as the wider issues of careful driving and road safety.”
