Thousands still without power due to high winds

Gale force gusts tore down hoardings surrounding Pioneer House – they were still down this afternoon (Friday).

A wall collapsed in Carlton Road, Batley Carr, blocking half of the street.

In Chickenley, the gable end of a house in Hazel Crescent collapsed.

Winds of up to 80pmh were recorded across Yorkshire yesterday. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service attended 16 incidents involving dangerous structures and three involving trees in the morning.

In Staincliffe, the high winds caused havoc in a residential street after a recycling firm’s stock blew away.

Robert Kirk, of Staincliffe Hall Road, said plastic due to be recycled from Land Polymers Limited, in Halifax Road, was strewn across the road and in Christ Church’s yard.

And in Healey Lane walls blew down from some houses which are under construction.

Some shops in Dewsbury town centre were said to have suffered problems with their power supplies.

Approximately 135,000 properties in the North East, Yorkshire and north Lincolnshire lost power due to the terrible weather. 5000 were still without power at 2pm today, Northern Powergrid reported.
