UPDATED WITH VIDEO: Travellers pitch up in Dewsbury railway station car park

Travellers piled into Dewsbury railway station car park yesterday (Wednesday).

Around ten caravans entered the council-owned car park on Wellington Road at 5pm, disrupting rush hour traffic.

British Transport Police said it was a civil matter and they would only take action if the travellers refused to move on after a court order was served.

A council spokeswoman said the council were aware of the travellers and would be taking legal action.

Senior station manager Steve Johnson said: “First TransPennine Express has deployed additional management and security staff and our managed areas are covered by state of the art CCTV.

“We will work with the council, British Transport Police and other local authorities to ensure that disruption in and around the station is kept to a minimum.”
