VIDEO: Batley Cub Scouts join 100 others to celebrate the centenary

One hundred Cub Scouts from across the country embarked on the adventure of a lifetime as they headed for a jam-packed weekend in Cumbria to celebrate their centenary year.

As part of the Cubs100 programme, Great Tower activity centre in the Lake District put together an adventure package to help them celebrate. The Cubs got to take part in plenty of adventurous activities including kayaking on Windermere, rock climbing, high ropes and mountain climbing. The aim of the weekend was to let Cubs have real adventures and fulfil the Scout Association recommendation that at least 50 percent of their Scouting activities should be held outside their Scout hut.Throughout the weekend the group conquered the climbing wall before zipping into a wet suit to go ghyll scrambling or scaling one of the Lake District’s peaks. Not only did the Cubs celebrate their centenary but also 80 years of the Great Tower activity centre.Julie, one of the leaders at 14th Batley, said: “This is such a fantastic weekend for our Cubs, it’s given them a chance to get away and take part in lots of new activities. “It’s also got them to join in with Cub pack from other parts of the country – and is great for letting them know they’re part of something bigger.“We’ve done lots of activities to celebrate Cubs100 – it’s such a big celebration.”Cub Scout Lewis, 10, from the group said: “I’ve had a brilliant time at the camp. “I’ve loved doing all the activities, especially the Kayaking. “It’s been so much fun and I’ve got to meet new people and make new friends. “Life would be boring if I wasn’t in Cubs as I wouldn’t get to do as much”
